Water Taste & Odor Changes

waterWater customers in Watauga may have noticed changes in the taste and odor of their drinking water recently.   The city assures customers that the water is safe, even though it has a different smell and taste.

According to the Fort Worth Water Department and the Trinity River Authority, which supply water to the City of North Richland Hills and Watauga, the naturally-occurring organic compound responsible for the earthy taste and odor is geosmin. It is a normal occurrence for there to be an increase in geosmin in area lakes this time of year. While the presence of geosmin may be easily detected by the average person, it is not toxic or harmful. The water remains safe to drink.

Customers may improve the taste of their drinking water by refrigerating the water in an open container or adding a slice of lemon or lime.
